Clinical Study for People Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease
Protocol: STUDY00008239
Full Title
Repurposing lithium as a disease-modifying therapy in Parkinson's disease: a randomized controlled trial.
Description
The University at Buffalo (UB) Department of Neurology is recruiting adults diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) for a new clinical research study. The goal of the study is to see if lithium (a medication that can be taken by mouth) can help to slow the progression of PD.

Participants will be enrolled in the study for about 24 weeks. They will be randomly assigned (which happens by chance, like flipping a coin) to receive either the study drug (lithium) or a control (which looks like the study drug but does not contain any active medication).

They will complete three in-person study visits to the UBMD Neurology Clinic in Williamsville and receive an MRI scan of their head at the beginning and end of the 24-week treatment period. They will also complete blood draws, physical exams, and surveys throughout the study.
