Monitoring psychological health and environmental exposures: Air pollutants, heat, and greenspace
The University at Buffalo (UB) Department of Psychology is recruiting adults with a history of depression living in urban areas of Erie and Niagara counties for a new study. The research team is interested in learning more about the impact of nature (for example, temperature, air pollution, and access to greenspaces such as public parks) on mental health.
After completing a screening survey, eligible participants will attend a 30-minute in-person visit to either the UB North Campus (on Maple Avenue in Williamsville) or
South Campus (at Main Street and Bailey Avenue). During this visit they will learn how to use a small environmental sensor that will be worn/carried daily and will download/install two smart phone apps.
For the next 30 days, participants will complete a short survey about their feelings throughout the day. They will also complete a daily diary about their mood, thoughts, mental health symptoms, exercise habits, and sleep patterns. Following this 30-day period, they will be invited to complete an online survey at 2 months and 4 months.
Participants will receive up to $560 for completing all study parts.
