Dental Study for Adults
Protocol: STUDY00002597
Full Title
Big Perio: Osteoimmunological Impact of Obesity in Periodontitis Pilot and Feasibility Study
Description
The University at Buffalo (UB) School of Dental Medicine is looking for adults to participate in a dental study. The goal of this study is to better understand the link between weight status and gum disease.

Both lean and overweight participants with and without gum disease will be recruited for this study. Eligible participants will attend two study visits on the UB South Campus (at Main Street and Bailey Avenue). The study first visit will take about 2-2.5 hours to complete and the second appointment will take about 45 minutes to complete.

During the study visit, participants will answer questions about their medical and dental histories; have height and weight measurements taken; provide blood, saliva and plaque samples. Also, a full comprehensive dental exam will be completed by a trained dental hygienist. X-rays will be taken if the patient does not have copies within one year of appointment. At the second appointment, a complete bone density test will be performed and fecal samples will be collected.

Consideration will be made for participants who will be traveling a longer distance to complete the study in one visit.
